Burlington, Ontario – Mike Wallace, Member of Parliament for Burlington has been elected Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.
This Committee has the power to review and report on the policies, programs and expenditure plans of the Department of Justice. The Committee also has the ability to review proposed amendments to the federal legislation relating to certain aspects of the criminal law, family law, human rights law, and the administration of justice with respect to the following statutes:
- Criminal Code
- Youth Criminal Justice Act
- Divorce Act
- Civil Marriage Act
- Canadian Human Rights Act
- Judges Act
- Court Administration Service Act
- Supreme Court Act
The Government of Canada has made restoring Canadians confidence in their justice system one of its priorities. “It is an honour to be elected as Chair by the Committee. As Chairman, I will ensure that the issues the Committee is reviewing will be appropriately and fairly discussed,” said Wallace.
